About
Us
Australia is one
of a number of countries undertaking major research studies into the
causes and prevention of stroke. Research programs are established
at the National Stroke Research Institute (NSRI) located at the Austin
and Repatriation Medical Centre.
The
National Stroke Research Institute is directed by Professor Geoffrey
Donnan and was established in 1994. The NSRI plays a key role in national
and international trials of treatment for stroke which so far, have greatly
improved services. To address the problem of stroke across its entire
spectrum, the National Stroke Research Institute is to conduct research
in the field of stroke at the highest level in a vertically integrated
fashion from divisions of Basic Science, Neuroimaging, and Ultrasound through to Clinical Trials, Epidemiology, Neurorehabilitation and Public
Health.
In
line with developing a national focus for our research, the first of
a network of collaborating centres was established at the Royal Melbourne
Hospital under the leadership of Professor Stephen Davis. We now have up to seven collaborating centres: Royal Perth Hospital, Menzies Research
Institute, Hobart, Flinders Medical Research Institute, St. Vincent's
Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Central Coast.
The
institute is always looking forward to the future and strategically planning new research
initiatives. The NSRI has grown considerably in the last few years and has built
an enviable national and global reputation for excellence.
